Christopher Vajda was the UK judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (“CJEU”) from 2012 until the withdrawal of the UK from the EU in 2020. He was party to judgments in over 800 cases in a wide range of fields, including direct and indirect tax.
He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1979. He was appointed a KC in 1997. He is a member of the Luxembourg Bar.
Prior to becoming a judge at the CJEU Christopher Vajda KC had a wide-ranging practice at the English Bar, including a significant EU tax practice. Since his return to Monckton Chambers in 2020 he has advised in many jurisdictions on cases involving EU law and has provided expert Opinions for courts and arbitration tribunals. He also sits as an arbitrator. In 2022 he was appointed by the EU as a member of its panel of persons suitable for appointment as Chairpersons for Arbitrations to which the EU is a party.
He is a professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and a visiting professor at King’s College, London, and a lecturer on private international law at Luxembourg University.
