12:30 Regulatory Outlook Briefing

The post-crisis regulatory consensus is breaking down and regulatory priorities in Europe are shifting, due to political pressures. What might this mean for global and pan-European businesses? Meanwhile, European asset managers are implementing a raft of new rules and are under the spotlight on costs and charges, needing to evidence “value for money”. Is this finally the catalyst to drive the whole industry towards truly putting the customer first? Regulation is also moving into new areas, such as fintech and sustainable finance. Are these developments irritants or do they provide opportunities?

Julie Patterson, Director, Asset Management, Regulatory Change, KPMG

Should we be using bonds or not in the portfolio?  What are the newest solutions and how do we weigh up the options?

14.30 -14.40 The macro perspective - What's up with global inflation?
Nathan Sheets PhD, PGIM

Given the divergent economic conditions in the years before and after the financial crisis, the broad similarities in global inflation performance are remarkable. The pre-crisis period saw rapid growth, building leverage in the financial system, and overheating in asset markets. The post-crisis period has seen softer growth and a gradual reduction in unemployment rates from very high levels. Financial markets have generally been on a recovering trajectory through the post-crisis period, but central banks have emphasized that there is now much less leverage in the core of the system than before the crisis. In addition, both before and after the financial crisis, inflation has typically shown very little imprint of variations in resource slack—the Phillips Curve has been very flat.  In this  discussion, Nathan Sheets, PhD will address some important questions about the features and drivers of global inflation

Best practice on how to deliver a diverse and inclusive investment and savings industry. What success will look like across gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background, LGBTI+, age and disability.

The Diversity Project. In early 2016, a group of leaders in the investment and savings profession decided to take action to accelerate progress towards an inclusive culture within our industry. We recognise that future success – for our clients, members, employers and shareholders – requires an inclusive culture.

FundForum has partnered with the Diversity Project to deliver a workshop to share the progress and processes that the project has made with the wider global investment community.

How do we accelerate progress towards an inclusive culture in the investment profession? An inclusive culture across all levels supports more effective teamwork, gives wider perspectives, better investment decisions, better results for our clients and ultimately more sustainable businesses.
