Cost and transparency

The journey towards cost transparency in the fund management world has been a long and painful one, particularly in Europe’s largest fund market, the UK. However, a range of recent initiatives and research has broken the deadlock and moved the agenda forward. Firstly, the researcher at the heart of the 9-year transparency journey proposed a cost data standard for the UK last year and this was immediately adopted by the largest single pool of institutional assets in the UK - the UK Local Government Pension Scheme (£217bn AUM). This was followed by the same standard being adopted by the Investment Association in its Disclosure Code, and then two asset managers signing up to the recently formalised LGPS cost code. Alongside this, forthcoming European and UK regulation on cost disclosure together with the market review by the FCA has made it clear that the asset management industry is under the regulatory microscope. Together, these initiatives have finally taken the once-opaque world of costs towards transparency. We will hear from all the key actors and change agents in this story in the course of what promises to be a lively panel debate.

  • Speaker Jeff Houston - Head of Pensions, Local Government Association
