Inspire New Thinking and Forge Commercial Relationships With 200+ Influential Members Of The Global Securities Community

Asia's Leading Network Management Event

A round-up of the conversation that took place at NeMa Asia 2016

Reacting to change is critical for custodians and market infrastructures. The consequences of Brexit, uncertainty of a Trump presidency, and an all too real possibility of an extremist government being elected in France next year, have certainly kept custodians on their toes.

Such market changing events point to the importance of having an effective contingency plan in place at sub-custodians. It is not just geopolitical paradigm shifts that are affecting custodians, but advancements in technology. Market participants - rather than pointing out deficiencies in Blockchain – are now acknowledging how collaboration can benefit both fin tech providers and the custody industry. In terms of regional APAC issues, NEMA discussed harmonisation. APAC harmonisation is still many years away. The markets are too fragmented and divergent for this to happen in the near-term but efforts are being made in the post-trade world and funds industry to bring closer alignment of rules, practices and standards. Again, even this is complicated. ASEAN CIS and ARFP have received positive commendations, but their success is not assured unless China is involved, which at present is not the case.
