Mark SmithGroup Chief Risk Officer at Standard Chartered
Mark Smith was appointed as Group Chief Risk Officer of Standard Chartered plc from January 2016. He initially was responsible for all elements of the Risk function, but from 1 July he also took over responsibility for the Bank’s Compliance function. Mark is based in London.
Mark joined Standard Chartered from HSBC, where he spent the previous 33 years.
Mark fulfilled two roles in the HSBC Global Risk function, as Chief Risk Officer Europe, Middle East & Africa, and Global Head of Wholesale Credit & Market Risk. He was appointed a Group General Manager in February 2013.
Mark joined Midland Bank in the UK in 1982. His early career spanned a number of areas, including retail and corporate banking, strategy and planning and project finance. He also undertook secondments to Eurotunnel and a government agency linked to Her Majesty’s Treasury. In 1999 he had his first role in Risk, as a member of the regional risk team for Asia Pacific, based in Hong Kong. He returned to London in 2002, and was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Global Corporate Banking.
Mark has a Masters Degree in Engineering from Cambridge University, an MBA from Manchester Business School and holds the ACIB professional banking qualification.
Mark is married with two children. Outside work, his main interests are sailing, an activity for which he claims no great skill, and skiing at which he is somewhat more proficient.
