Russell Deakin is an alternative asset executive with over 25 years’ experience in North America, Europe and South America with real estate, private equity/venture capital, and infrastructure/energy. Mr. Deakin has been a partner of VC fund and a managing director of a private equity firm. Also Mr. Deakin was a CFO for 11 years for a real estate developer in addition to being on boards of invested companies and interim CFO for other portfolio companies. Mr. Deakin is also a successful investor/fund raiser in these asset classes. Since 1987 he has invested and fundraised in the U.S, Europe, and Latin America.
Mr. Deakin is a Managing Partner of Aceana Group, an independent advisor to investors in private investments. Mr. Deakin has made proprietary investments in venture capital, growth capital & real estate. Within private equity, Mr Deakin has focused on evaluating existing portfolio companies and new investments in the U.S and Latin America (both direct and co-investments) on behalf of investors. With regards to real estate, Mr Deakin has made proprietary investments as well as for institutional clients in the U.S and Latin America. On behalf of GPs, Mr. Deakin has focused on raising money from pension funds, endowments, foundations, family offices, fund of funds, outsourced CIO’s & consultants. Additionally, Mr. Deakin has advised these investors on strategy and structuring of funds, which includes such tasks as defining jurisdictions, writing PPMs, pitch books and establishing marketing budgets and time frames.
Previous to Aceana, Mr. Deakin was a Managing Director of Rio Bravo Investimentos, an independent fund manager with total AUM of USD 4.6 billion. In 2011, Mr. Deakin set up its profitable America’s office in Miami, and successfully spearheaded international fundraising activities, including the Rio Bravo Energy fund ($315 mm), a Brazilian private equity fund that invests in the Brazilian power sector. Before this, Mr. Deakin was a Partner at CRP Participações, Brazil’s oldest private equity/venture capital firm; and prior to that, for 11 years, he was a Partner and CFO for a Brazilian real estate developer.
Mr. Deakin also has previous capital markets experience with Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch in London. A dual British and American citizen, Mr. Deakin has a BA in economics and history from Tufts, where he was selected for an Honors exchange program with Oxford University. He also has an MBA in International Marketing and Finances from the Anderson Graduate School at UCLA.
