Chuan has more than 22 years of experience as an early stage venture capitalist in Internet tech industry. Chuan and his partners established AlphaX Partners (AXP), a venture fund with a focus on China’s technology and new media sector, immediately after a spin out from Highland Capital Partners in June 2016. At AlphaX, Chuan is focusing on investments in Internet, digital media and enterprise solution sectors.
Prior to co-founding AlphaX, Chuan was a general partner at Highland and the founder of Highland China. He was responsible for the fund’s investments in China. As an early stage investor, Chuan represented Highland to invest in Qihoo (NYSE:QIHU), China’s largest Internet secured service provider, in 2006 and became the largest institutional shareholder. He continued to serve on the board after the company’s IPO in 2011. Chuan also invested in 6.CN (acquired by Song Chen - SZ 300144), Tuniu (NASDAQ TOUR), NetentSec (acquired by Qihoo360, Kascend, etc.
Prior to joining Highland, Chuan was a Partner at JAFCO America Ventures, responsible for JAFCO’s venture investment operations on the east coast of the US. He divided his time between venture investments and Asia business development activities. During this period, Chuan contributed to the growth and success of Pirus Networks (acquired by Sun Microsystems), Crescent Networks (acquired by Marconi) and edocs (acquired by Siebel).
Earlier in his career, Chuan worked at the headquarters of JAFCO Group in Tokyo as an investment officer for its Global IT Investment Group. While at JAFCO Tokyo, Chuan worked on several telecom broadband and online service investments in China, Japan, and North America. He also helped JAFCO Group expand its investment activities into the global market and US-based portfolio companies such as Ciena and Nvidia establish international strategic partnerships in the Asia-Pacific market.
