Umar leads the Group Financial Crime Policy, Standards and Advisory for M&G plc and was involved in the first Enterprise-wide risk assessment following merger/demerger and the firms public listing in 2019. He possesses strong, applied and practical knowledge across a broad spectrum of financial crime risks and oversees the governance and associated control frameworks globally, where the firm operates.

One of his proudest achievements was being lead SME for a project to appoint a sanctions compliance solution provider for public market investments, which led to improved compliance efficiency and reduced operation burden. This solution was particularly useful ahead of the wave of unprecedented sanctions that followed the Russia-Ukraine war, especially for a firm involved in fast markets. Umar has led on many initiatives and improvements throughout his career, introducing automation and inhouse solutions similar or on par with industry service providers. Umar has a developing interesting in AI and how this can improve how risks are organised and managed.

Umar has over 20 years’ experience within financial services across international markets, with the last 8 of those years focused on anti-financial crime.
