Dr. Maitena Arakistain

Maitena is an English solicitor and a Professor of law at the Commercial and Civil Law Department of the University of the Basque Country, where she has been teaching and researching the topic of Succession and Family Law for the last seven years. She recently completed her Doctoral thesis on a comparison of the legal position of the surviving spouse or partner of the deceased under English, Spanish and Basque Succession Law. She is a member of the Basque Government funded Research Group GIC IT 1445-22, "The Individual, Family and Property", led by Dr. Gorka Galicia, where she continues to research and publish on topics relevant to succession and family law.

Maitena started her career as a commercial and competition law specialist in the London office of Baker McKenzie in 1997. In 2001, she left the firm to join the UK Government Legal Services, where she worked as a law officer at the UK Office of Fair Trading (Competition and Markets Authority) until 2005 and as a senior legal adviser at the Commercial Law Department of the Ministry of Defence from 2005 until 2013.

Maitena now lives in the Basque Country, Spain, where she works as a consultant and university teacher.
